With turnout reaching more than 50 %, the referendum on whether Moldovans want to join the European Union will be valid.

A turnout of at least 33,33 % was needed.

Polls showed the yes will likely win as some anti-EU parties called for a boycott.

Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, who is running for re-election on Sunday, said after casting her ballot in the simultaneous referendum on EU integration that the ex-Soviet country is facing a historic choice.

Sandu said the outcome of the referendum "will define our fate for many decades to come" - alluding to the implicit decision about whether Moldova will orient itself towards Europe or Russia.
