Authorities in Los Angeles deployed tear gas and arrested dozens after a “No Kings” protest near a federal detention center turned confrontational, marking one of thousands of demonstrations held across the United States and Europe over the weekend to protest President Donald Trump’s policies and the war in Iran. Los Angeles police said 74 people were taken into custody for failing to comply with a dispersal order, while another individual was arrested on suspicion of carrying a dagger.
The clashes followed mostly peaceful marches, with hundreds of protesters surrounding a federal complex in downtown Los Angeles and some throwing rocks, bottles, and broken concrete at officers. Two law enforcement officials were injured by debris and received medical attention. Video from independent journalist Andre Andrews Jr. showed protesters using shields and gas masks to return tear-gas canisters thrown by authorities, while others broke concrete barriers to hurl at police. Arrests included eight juveniles and a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty.
In Denver, authorities declared an unlawful assembly and used smoke canisters after a small group blocked a road, resulting in nine arrests. Nationwide, demonstrations stretched from New York City to Driggs, Idaho, with events also taking place in Minnesota, where Bruce Springsteen headlined a rally on the Capitol lawn. The protests, organized by the group Indivisible, drew millions across multiple countries, with organizers estimating at least 8 million participants in the U.S. alone. Organizers described the rallies as powerful, historic, and energetic displays of resistance to Trump’s actions and immigration policies.
