FIFA demands clarification over alleged govt interference in NFF, threatens sanction FIFA has requested clarification from Nigerian football authorities over reports alleging government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). In a letter dated September 1, 2026, signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström on behalf of the FIFA Council, the world football governing body said it had taken note of reports that NFF President Ibrahim Gusau had resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency. FIFA said such a development, if confirmed, could raise concerns under its statutes governing the independence of member associations. The organisation cited Articles 14 and 19 of the FIFA Statutes, which require member associations to manage their affairs independently and without undue influence from third parties, including government authorities.
