MAJORITY OF ARTISTS WITHDRAW FROM NATIONAL MALL 250TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT LINEUP AMID POLITICAL CONTROVERSY. (PHOTO).

Majority of artists withdraw from National Mall 250th anniversary concert lineup amid political controversy

Nine musical acts were originally announced on Wednesday for concerts tied to the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding at the “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall. Within days, however, seven of those artists had announced they would no longer participate, citing various concerns, including claims they were not fully informed about the event’s political associations.

Rapper Young MC said he withdrew after learning more about the organizers, stating in a social media post that he was not aware of any political involvement when he agreed to perform. He added that he believed the event had been presented as nonpartisan and said he hoped to perform in Washington in the future at a less politically charged setting.

Other acts also moved to distance themselves from the lineup. Morris Day and The Time were among the first to confirm they would not appear, while Milli Vanilli’s original members said they were not involved in any advertised performances using the group’s name. Freedom Williams of C+C Music Factory said he was unaware of the political context when booking the show and later expressed frustration over the situation, though he also suggested he might still consider performing. Country singer Martina McBride said she felt misled, stating she believed she had been invited to a nonpartisan celebration before deciding to withdraw.

The Commodores also exited the lineup, saying they avoid affiliation with any single political party and prefer to keep their music separate from politics. Bret Michaels of Poison later said he withdrew due to safety concerns and described the evolving nature of the event as more divisive than he had anticipated.

As of now, only Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida remain scheduled to perform, though the lineup could still change as the situation develops.

The concerts are being organized by Freedom 250, which describes itself as nonpartisan and focused on commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. A spokesperson reiterated that mission, saying the organization aims to host inclusive celebrations that unite Americans. However, the group’s leadership has also acknowledged connections to political efforts tied to the anniversary planning, fueling continued debate over the nature of the events.
