Tommy DeCarlo, the vocalist who stepped in to lead Boston after the tragic passing of original singer Brad Delp, has died at the age of 60.
His family shared the news on social media on Monday, March 9, 2026. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo,” the post read.
The message added that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer last September and “fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.”
Signed with love by his children Annie, Talia, and Tommy Jr., the post asked that friends and fans respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time, concluding with, “Rest in peace, Dad.”
Tom Scholz, reflecting on his bandmate’s life, described DeCarlo as “a competitive athlete and yet a gentle soul” who was “remembered by his son and many others as a sweet man who did not deserve to be cut down at such a young age.” Scholz noted that one of Tommy’s favorite songs to perform was To Be a Man.
“While many people will remember Tommy giving his audience amazing live performances, I will remember him as the incredible singer who appeared out of nowhere to rescue BOSTON in 2007,” Scholz said. “He gave all of us 10 additional years of performing our most memorable live shows. Rest in peace, Tommy, you did know what it took to be a man.”
DeCarlo’s health struggles had been serious. According to a GoFundMe page set up for him, he suffered a sudden brain bleed and underwent emergency surgery in September 2025, during which doctors discovered two melanoma masses on his brain and another spot on his lungs.
The fundraiser noted that although he initially recovered and began treatment, a second brain bleed led to hospitalization from November 27 to December 27, 2025.
Back in October 2025, DeCarlo had informed fans that he was facing “unexpected health issues” that required him to step back from performing.
He emphasized that it was “not an easy choice” but necessary to focus on his recovery, promising to return to the stage with full energy. Boston subsequently canceled their remaining shows for 2025.
Before joining Boston, DeCarlo worked as a credit manager at a Home Depot in North Carolina.
A self-taught pianist and choir singer, he had been inspired by Brad Delp, eventually taking the lead vocals for one of rock’s most beloved bands. His journey from fan to frontman remains a testament to passion, talent, and dedication.
