The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace hardwork and shun the temptation of going into crimes.
Magu made the appeal on June 11, 2019, in Lagos when the students of Saint Joseph Secondary School, Mangoro, Agege, Lagos, paid courtesy call during an excursion to the Commission’s Lagos Zonal office.
The Lagos Zonal Head of EFCC, Ado Aminu Ado, who represented the EFCC Chair described corruption as a disease ravaging Nigeria like a scourge adding that it is the reason ‘our society is underdeveloped’.
He further stated that corruption and economic crimes had not only deprived the nation the necessary infrastructure and facilities, but had impacted negatively on the educational sector adding that it has also affected the psyche of the youths, so much that they only think that the way out is to turn to crimes.
"It is so disheartening to see that the expected leaders of tomorrow now see internet fraud as a shortcut to success. It has become so bad that they now see the infamous Yahoo Yahoo crime as an industry", he said.
He further advised the students to shun the practice of using the Internet for criminal activities, saying, “You can use the internet to broaden your knowledge by using the e-library to study hard.
“You can use the Internet to develop yourselves with determination to achieve your dreams. There is no alternative to hardwork. It will culminate into enduring successes and achievements in future. I urge you all as young minds to remain focus and shun all the vices and criminal tendencies around you”, he added.
“Those who use the Internet for yahoo yahoo cannot escape the wrath of the law because the long arm of the law will catch up with them some day and they will be made to pay for their criminal practices”.
According to him, crimes don’t pay adding that there is no shortcut to success and as leaders of tomorrow, “our hope of a better Nigeria lies on you”.
Also speaking, the Head, Public Affairs Directorate, PAD, Lagos, Ayo Oyewole emphasized the importance of building the minds of the youngsters around the virtue of integrity.
“The most important thing in life is integrity. When your mind is full of positive values, you will also want to do positive things that will impact on the society”, he said.
Ayo also urged the management of the schools to set up an integrity club in the school, which will further help the students to live upright and shun the inherent dangers of corruption.
In her remarks, Godspower Ikechukwu Achilefu, who led the students to the Commission’s Lagos office, expressed his gratitude to the Commission for availing the students the opportunity to visit the Commission as part of their school curriculum.
“We felt highly honoured and very proud of the EFCC. This is the second time we are bringing our students here to interact with you and learn more about the works of the EFCC and the importance of the fight against corruption", he said.
The highlight of the event is the presentation of a souvenir to Aminu Ado in recognition of the commitment of the Commission to the fight against corruption.More photos below.
