The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner of Police and that of Homeland Affairs to increase security surveillance in Onitsha metropolis with special reference to Onitsha-Owerri road.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Mr. Noble Igwe representing Ogbaru I constituency and seconded by Mr. Ejike Okechukwu representing Anaocha II constituency during plenary on July 11.

The Speaker, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze who presided over the plenary had put the motion to a voice vote while the lawmakers unanimously adopted it through voice votes.

Speaking on the motion, Mr. Igwe said that armed robbers regularly rob and oppress unsuspecting members of the public at will and had a field day on most cases at the area.

He expressed concern that Onitsha-Owerri road axis of Onitsha has been a nightmare to motorists and commuters, hence the call for the increase of security surveillance there.

According to him, citizens of Anambra have been dislodged by armed robbers on daily basis, thus having minor or major injuries inflicted upon.

``I'm worried that if it continues, the way in which they operate not checkmated, there would be a state of lawlessness in which people may resort to self-help.

``I'm convinced that these criminals would be trapped and brought to book if enough incentives are provided for the security operatives.

``Be it therefore resolves, that Anambra State House of Assembly calls on Gov. Soludo to direct the Commissioners of Police and Homeland Affairs to increase security surveillance in Onitsha metropolis’’, Igwe stressed.

The lawmakers that spoke in favour of the motion include Mr. Akaegbobi Johnbosco Nwabugwu representing Nnewi South II, Mr. Umennajiego Jude Onitsha South II, Mr. Okafor Patrick Onitsha North II and Mr. Ikwunne Chimezie representing Awka North constituency.

Others are Mr. Mbachu Henry representing Awka South I, Mr. Ezenwa Frederick Onitsha South I, Mr. Udemezue Bernard Ayamelum and Mr. Udoba Patrick Obalum representing Anambra West constituency.

They described the motion as apt, and stressed the need for proper security surveillance in Onitsha and its environs.

The lawmakers while commending the governor for doing great in security surveillance in rural areas of the state, urged him to add more energy to security surveillance in Onitsha, especially the Owerri road axis. (MOI)
