 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. The Lagos Central Business District (CBD), has arrested and prosecuted a total of 833 vehicle drivers and 49 tricycles drivers in one year for flouting traffic rules.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser on Central Business Districts, Bola Lawal on Monday at a ministerial press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre Alausa, Ikeja.

“A total of 833 vehicle drivers and 49 tricycle drivers were arrested and prosecuted accordingly for various traffic offences ranging from illegal parking, illegal U-turn, obstruction, one-way and obstruction of traffic” she said.

Lawal revealed that two CBD operatives were disciplined for extortion from motorists by outright dismissal.

She sympathized with victims of the fire outbreak at a section of the Idumota market area and assured that the government is at work and not sleeping on the incident.

“Again, I want to express my deepest sympathies to all those who have been affected by this tragedy. The government understands the pain and uncertainty that many of you are feeling right now and I want you to know that you are not alone

“The government is here to support you every step of the way as we rebuild and recover from this disaster” the special adviser stated.

“I want to assure you that the government is fully committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of our buildings in the affected area” she added.
