Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. In October, Niger renamed several historic sites in its capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.  PDP Presidential Aspirant Commends Tinubu for SEDC Board Appointments

Dr. Cosmos Ndukwe, a 2023 presidential aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his appointments to the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Board of Directors.

The former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly described the appointed members as highly competent individuals with proven records of effectiveness. He expressed confidence that their leadership would be instrumental in addressing the infrastructural challenges facing the South East region.

Last week, President Tinubu submitted the nominees for Senate confirmation, with the updated list including Chief Emeka Wogu (former Minister of Labour and Productivity) as Chairman, Mark Okoye as Managing Director/CEO, Hon. Toby Okechukwu (former House of Representatives member) as Executive Director of Projects, and Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka (former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly) as Executive Director of Finance, among others.

In a statement issued on Monday, Ndukwe, who recently joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed confidence that the appointees’ expertise and dedication would ensure the success of the SEDC. He emphasized that the commission’s objectives would be achieved under their leadership, ultimately realizing President Tinubu's vision for South East development.

Ndukwe, who has also served as the Commissioner for Works in Abia State and Chief of Staff to the State Governor, commended President Tinubu for signing the SEDC Act into law—a milestone that previous administrations had failed to accomplish. He recognized the commission’s potential to bridge the South East’s infrastructural gap and address concerns of marginalization.

“The creation of the SEDC represents a turning point for the South East,” Ndukwe said, praising President Tinubu for securing a legacy that addresses long-standing issues of neglect and ensures the region has a dedicated mechanism to drive development.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for sponsoring the SEDC Bill, referring to him as “a proactive and visionary leader.”

“The Deputy Speaker’s leadership in championing the SEDC Bill is a significant contribution to both the South East and Nigeria,” Ndukwe added.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the newly established commission would help the South East achieve its development goals, thanking both President Tinubu and Hon. Kalu for their efforts in bringing the initiative to fruition.
