A Limpopo man who stabbed his girlfriend to death in front of his own mother will spend the next 20 years in prison. The Polokwane High Court sentenced 48 year old Nathaniel Molatelo Mokgehle from Sekonye Village in the Botlokwa policing area for the murder of his girlfriend, 41 year old Mokgadi Julia Mohlaela. The court heard he chased her out of the house and continued stabbing her until she collapsed and died. Mokgehle also received six months for malicious damage to property. The sentence will run at the same time as the 20 year murder sentence. Evidence presented in court showed the victim had previously opened a malicious damage to property case against him. He was still attending court for that case when the murder happened. The attack happened on 08 June 2025 around 16:00 at his mother’s home in Sekonye Village. Mohlaela had gone there to speak with his mother about ending the relationship because of alleged abuse. During the confrontation, Mokgehle pulled out a knife and ...

 FOUR DEATHS TOO MANY

Odunbaku Bacculala

It is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the painful reality before us. Just on the 27th of July, 2025, we joyfully witnessed the inauguration of newly elected Council Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors across Lagos State.

Sadly, in less than two months, the cold hands of death have taken away four of these vibrant leaders, all women, all dedicated to service.

1. Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor, Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki, passed on 13th August, 2025 (just 17 days after inauguration).

2. Hon. Zainab Shotayo, Councillor, Ward C (Chief Whip), Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, passed on 18th August, 2025 (22 days after inauguration).

3. Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman, Badagry West LCDA, passed on 20th September, 2025 (55 days after inauguration).

4. Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor, Ward F, Shomolu, passed on 21st September, 2025 (56 days after inauguration).

There are moments when words are too frail to carry the weight of grief, when silence speaks more eloquently than language ever could. The sorrow of losing such radiant and promising souls defies expression. For when death takes a loved one, what remains are memories, precious, tender, and eternal.

In less than sixty days, four shining lights have been dimmed. Four families are mourning. Four constituencies are grieving. And our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has lost pillars of promise and service.

This is indeed a moment of deep sadness, not just for their loved ones, but for all of us who believe in the future of grassroots leadership.

Their dreams for their constituencies were cut short, but their courage and commitment will never be forgotten.

Yet, even in this season of grief, we must remain steadfast. Let these losses remind us of the fragility of life, the urgency of service, and the sacred responsibility we all share to carry forward the ideals they stood for.

As a party and as a people, let us stand united, stronger, and more determined to honour their memories through purposeful leadership and unwavering dedication to our communities.

I pray that the Almighty comforts their families, strengthens their constituencies, and grants us the fortitude to bear these painful losses.

May their gentle souls rest in perfect peace.
