In the spirit of the upcoming United Nations International Day of Peace, observed globally on September 21, Christian and Muslim scholars in Kaduna have been engaging in exchange visits to strengthen interfaith harmony, unity, and tolerance.
Pastor (Dr.) Yohanna Buru, General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, hosted a delegation of Muslim scholars at his church, expressing delight at the gesture. He emphasized this year’s theme, “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals”, stressing that peace requires joint efforts to promote justice, reduce poverty, address inequality, and resolve conflicts.
Pastor Buru recalled his own visits to Muslim communities in the past, noting that such exchanges deepen mutual respect between the two faiths. He urged young Christians and Muslims in Kaduna to embrace peace and shun hate speech, particularly online. He further encouraged citizens to register for voter cards ahead of the 2027 elections and support credible leadership.
Responding, Ambassador Dr. Idris Musa of the Northern Nigeria Elders Network for Peace praised Pastor Buru’s long-standing commitment to interfaith dialogue. He said the visit formed part of this year’s Peace Day activities, which focus on inter-community engagements to promote peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Musa also commended Pastor Buru’s tradition of visiting Muslim communities during Maulud and Eid celebrations, describing him as a rare example of practical peacebuilding.
The International Day of Peace, established by the UN in 2001, is marked every September 21 as a day dedicated to non-violence and global solidarity, encouraging dialogue and cooperation across nations.
