Ohio farmer, 85, loses 300 pumpkins to thieves

An 85-year-old farmer in Pickerington, Ohio, is reeling after thieves stole hundreds of his prized pumpkins in late September. Terry Dunlap, owner of Sam’s Pumpkin Patch, discovered that roughly 300 pumpkins had been taken, a loss he estimates at more than $6,000. Many of the stolen pumpkins were among his most prized, featuring large, sturdy stems that set them apart.

Dunlap first noticed the theft while checking his fields. “When I went in to spray, the vines were all knocked down and the pumpkins were all gone,” he said, suspecting the thieves struck under the cover of night. The farm, founded in 1988 with Dunlap’s late partner Sam Patterson, has been a long-standing community fixture. In response to the theft, Dunlap installed a locked gate and is working with local Amish growers to restock his stand. He has also filed a report with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and is offering a reward for tips, urging neighbors to watch for unusually large pumpkins appearing in local yards. The theft highlights a broader issue, as other nearby pumpkin growers have also faced losses this fall.
