Convicted Killer Amber-Lee Hughes Faces Cross-Examination
Amber-Lee Hughes, 26, is back in the Johannesburg High Court as the State begins cross-examining her during sentencing for the rape and murder of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita.
Hughes killed the child in January 2023 while she was in her care at a Glenvista home. She has admitted the crime but told the court she believed she was “saving” the child and considered taking her own life.
The accused revealed struggles with bipolar disorder and depression and said she had sometimes stopped medication due to financial problems. She apologised to Nada-Jane’s family and expressed regret.
The State is set to challenge her testimony and argue for a severe sentence. Nada-Jane’s father is expected to give evidence later.
The court is weighing Hughes’s mental health against the shocking nature of the crime.
