The Ogun State Ministry of Justice has disclosed that Miss Nsikak Abigail Emem, popularly known as Mirabel, the TikTok user whose sexual assault allegation sparked widespread reactions in February, was found to have made a false claim and that the case lacked merit for prosecution.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), made the disclosure in a statement issued on Wednesday, four months after the incident generated public outrage on social media.
According to Ogungbade, investigations conducted by relevant authorities, alongside admissions allegedly made by Mirabel, established that the rape allegation was deliberately fabricated.
He stated that there was consequently no offender to be arrested or prosecuted in connection with the claim and no threat to public safety arising from the narrative initially presented.
The commissioner explained that after a comprehensive review of the circumstances, the government concluded that the interest of justice would be better served through psycho-social rehabilitation rather than criminal prosecution.
He said Mirabel was subsequently placed under the care of the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, where she has been receiving rehabilitative support.
Ogungbade added that periodic reports received by the Ministry of Justice indicate that she has responded positively to rehabilitation and is currently preparing for examinations to further her academic pursuits.
Mirabel had earlier alleged in a viral social media post that unidentified persons invaded her residence in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, and sexually assaulted her. The claim triggered widespread public concern, attracted comments from celebrities, and led to donations from sympathisers.
However, the allegation later came under scrutiny following reported inconsistencies, including the absence of supporting phone records and a lack of evidence indicating a forced break-in at the residence.
The Ogun State Police Command had earlier confirmed that Mirabel voluntarily presented herself at a police station in connection with the allegation. Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said she underwent a medical examination before being released to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for further care.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice also provided an update on the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in the Ibogun area of the state, revealing progress in efforts to bring the suspects to justice.
Ogungbade recalled that four men allegedly took turns sexually assaulting the teenager. While one suspect, Segun Samuel, was arrested shortly after the incident, three others reportedly fled.
He disclosed that sustained collaboration between the ministry and the police led to the arrest of the alleged ringleader, Qudus Abiola Yekini, describing the development as a major breakthrough in the case.
The commissioner noted that two other suspects remain at large but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all those involved are apprehended and prosecuted.
The ministry commended the Ogun State Police Command for its role in securing the arrest, particularly the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, and other senior officers involved in the investigation.
According to the statement, the arrest underscores the Ogun State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence and demonstrates its resolve to ensure justice for victims.
The government also reiterated its condemnation of all forms of criminal conduct, including violent assaults against vulnerable persons and the making of false allegations, warning that offenders would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
