Qatar player Assim Madibo banned for five matches after leg-breaking World Cup tackle
The FIFA disciplinary committee has handed Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo a five-match suspension following a tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Canada's Ismaël Koné during their World Cup group stage match. The decision, which remains subject to appeal, was issued on the grounds of serious foul play.
The incident occurred during the 51st minute of Canada's 6-0 victory in Vancouver. Madibo received a straight red card for a challenge from behind that immediately raised alarms among nearby players. Koné was stretchered off the pitch and subsequently underwent surgery to repair fractures to the tibia and fibula in his left leg.
The severe injury cast a shadow over Canada's historic first-ever World Cup victory. Following the match, Madibo was visibly distressed and offered a personal apology to Koné. The Canadian midfielder later expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking fans and well-wishers for their support and prayers during his recovery. Representatives for the Qatari national team have not offered an official comment regarding the ruling.
While significant, Madibo's five-game suspension is not the harshest penalty in tournament history. FIFA previously issued a nine-match ban and a four-month soccer ban to Uruguay's Luis Suárez for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Additionally, Italian defender Mauro Tassotti received an eight-match suspension in 1994 for throwing an elbow at Spain's Luis Enrique.
