UPDATE: SEAN GRAYSON IS THE FORMER SANGAMON COUNTY (ILLINOIS) DEPUTY WHO TOOK THE LIFE OF 36-YEAR-OLD SONYA MASSEY. (PHOTO).

 Sean Grayson has died.

Sean Grayson is the former Sangamon County (Illinois) deputy who took the life of 36-year-old Sonya Massey.

Grayson fatally shot Sonya after threatening to 'shoot her in the f***ing face' as Sonya removed a pot of boiling water from the stove and placed it on a counter. He stated he was in fear for his life and shot at her three times, with one round, striking her in the face. He did not render aid, however, his partner did.

The initial call came in when Sonya thought she saw a prowler in her yard, however, Sonya was clearly in need of mental health help as the call progessed. Sonya Massey was polite and calm throughout the entire incident.

Grayson had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2023. He still had stage 3 cancer at the time of the incident on July 6th, 2024.

After he was incarcerated, the cancer rapidly progressed, advancing to his lungs, liver, and rectum.

Grayson filed for an early release under the medical release act in May 2026. At that time, Grayson had been told he had only 18 months to live, and he stated he "did not want to die behind bars". The request was denied. The prison board stated he was still a danger.

Grayson requested again on July 31st, 2026, and was again denied. His attorney, alongside Grayson,  pleaded to the prison review board that Grayson only had a very short time to live. He was denied.

Sean Grayson passed away around noon on Sunday, August 23rd. He had served 6 months of his 20 year sentence.
