LASPARK, LAWMA CELEBRATE FESTIVE SEASON WITH ECOFRIENDLY CHRISTMAS TREES
The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has demonstrated to residents that waste materials can be used to creatively improve the aesthetics of the environment, following the transformation of pet bottles and discarded old tyres to Ecofriendly Christmas Trees.
Speaking during an interview with the press at LASPARK's Head Office in Ikeja, the General Manager of the Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, stated that the idea was borne out of the desire to demonstrate simple ways to turn waste to wealth.
Popoola reiterated that LASPARK's responsibility is to beautify Lagos and the initiative showcases one of the creative ways to realise the Agency's mandate, stressing that the beautification can be achieved in so many ways.
"We partnered with LAWMA on the initiative to use recyclables that we see on the roads and in our houses since we don't see them as anything else other than waste. We decided to display one of the simple ways pet bottles and old tyres can be used for decorations", she added.
Speaking on the poor attitude of residents to waste disposal and management, the General Manager noted all the plastic bottles and tyres used for the decorations would have ordinarily ended up in drainages, canals, highways or gardens constituting nuisances to the environment, but the agencies opted to collect and reuse them for beautification purposes thereby adding value to the environment for the yuletide season.
She mentioned that over 12,000 plastic bottles and 60 tyres of various sizes were used to create the Ecofriendly Christmas Trees executed by one of the Agency's partners, Foundation for a Better Environment (F.A.B.E).
Popoola disclosed that the Ecofriendly Christmas Tree decorations are strategically positioned at Johnson-Jakande-Tinubu (JJT) Park; Alausa Secretariat setback; LAWMA Head Office garden, Ijora; Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (opposite 7up) and Allen Avenue Traffic Intersection, Ikeja.
