 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. PANTAMI: OVER FOUR YEARS, 4,366 DIGITAL ECONOMY SECTOR PROJECTS SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED


Pantami Reports Successful Implementation of 4,366 Digital Economy Projects in Four Years
In a virtual and physical commissioning ceremony held in Abuja, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami, announced that a total of 4,366 projects have been successfully implemented over the past four years.

These projects encompass a range of initiatives, such as the establishment of Emergency Communications centers by the Nigerian Communications Commission, the development of ICT centers by the National Information Technology Development Agency, the deployment of ten operational mailing vehicles for the Nigerian Postal Service, and nationwide Universal Service Provision projects.

During the ceremony, Pantami inaugurated various projects, including the construction and equipping of an IT Hub in Gashua, Yobe State (North-East), a Digital Awareness Programme at Cardoso High School in Apapa, Lagos State (South-West), a Community IT Training Centre in Ogbomoso, Oyo State (South-West), a Digital Nigeria Centre at General Hassan Usman Katsina Unity College in Bauchi, Bauchi State (North-East), a Mini-ICT Square Project at FUT Minna, Niger State (North-Central), and a Digital Nigeria Centre at Udi Abia Secondary School in Udi, Enugu State (South-East), among others.

Pantami emphasized that Nigeria's digital economy has experienced significant growth in the past four years, primarily attributed to the implementation of well-crafted policies. He highlighted that broadband coverage expanded from 23 percent to an impressive 80.86 percent during this period. The Minister expressed delight that the sector's contribution to Nigeria's economy surged from N51.3 million to N408.7 billion within the four-year timeframe. Additionally, he noted that National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment increased from 39 million to 100 million under the government's efforts.

The ceremony featured the ribbon-cutting for multiple projects, the unveiling of a comprehensive 443-page compendium highlighting major achievements, programs, and initiatives in the digital economy sector, the presentation of ten mailing vehicles for NIPOST, and the celebration of over 100 million NIN enrolments.
