NDC STATEMENT ON COURT RULING Our attention has been drawn to a ruling by the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja this morning, wherein His Lordship, Honourable Justice Isah Dashen, gave a ruling on an application filed by an unregistered association known as Peace Movement Party. The public knows that by December 2025, the Nigeria Democratic Congress  as an association complained of INEC’s refusal to register us as a political party, whereupon we proceeded to the Federal High Court. The Agbaelu Improvement Union (AIU), Akpo, Aguata LGA has banned canon shots/gun shots at funerals/social gatherings to avert threat of lives and property associated with it.

It was elaborate deliberation among union members but agreed unanimously that fun of cannon shots/gun shots at funerals is not enough to lose lives, send people to permanent disabilities.

The motion to banning this cultural practices is sequel to an incident of a Canon Shot Operator, Mr Chukwunonso Okoye losing his leg during operation at Nze Edmund Okpalaima's Funeral at Agbaelu Village, Akpo, on June 23, 2023.

The victim is to walk with crutches all through his life as the affected leg has been amputated.

The Chairman of the Union, Nze Ifeanyi Ezema while announcing the ban said that cannon shots/gun shots have been in our culture long before now.

"Change is one thing that is constant. So, changes in housing pattern where we have glass houses almost everywhere, brick/cement foundation, economic hardship, demand ban in this culture practice."

He, then, declared it banned in a general meeting of the union, at Agbaelu Village Hall, Akpo, Aguata LGA, on August 18.

The union enjoined Anambra State House of Assembly to consider making a law banning this cultural practice in the State, as it has tendency of doing more harm than good. (MOI))
