  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Immigration to introduce new visa regime

The Acting Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Caroline Adepoju, has disclosed that the Service is planning to introduce a new visa regime, named: “Economic Trust Visa”.

She disclosed this while speaking in a press conference organised to commence the 60th-anniversary celebration of the NIS at the Service headquarters on Monday.

The Ag CG said: “We are looking at using our visa regime to support the vision of the Nigerian government in improving our economy.

“We have proposed the issuance of an Economic Trust Visa whereby we will assist interested investors in checking the profiles of their would-be partners.

“We will work hand in hand with security agencies in Nigeria to ensure that foreign direct investors are not swindled of their hard-earned money.”

She also said the Service will invest more in border management in the years ahead, adding that more logistics would be made available for personnel to do their job.

“We are deploying technology, we are deploying well-trained personnel in all the borders,” the Ag CG said.

She said the standardisation of the services of NIS would continue by exposing personnel to training to conform with internationally accepted standards.

According to her, more passport offices would be opened across the country while all passport processes would be automated to avoid human contact.

“Our technical partners are working hard to ensure that we have enough passport booklets because when there are booklets, sharp practices will also be reduced, she added.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
