The Anambra  State chapter of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA)  on October 12, embarked on "Walk for sight campaign"  to mark this year's World Sight Day in Onitsha.

The  theme for this year's world sight day is titled "LOVE YOUR EYES AT WORK" As it implies, yet a profound reminder of the precious gift of sight that is often taken for granted..

According to World Health Organization (WHO), globally over two billion people are visually impaired or blind, of which at least one billion people's vision impairment can be prevented.

In an interview with the Anambra State chairman of the Association, Dr. Chidiebele Ezeanowai, he said that the world sight day is marked every second Thursday in October annually and they engage in a one week activities to mark the celebration.

According to him, they partnered with Onitsha North and Idemmili North Local Government for free eye screening, in which free spectacles were given to screened staff. lectures were also given to them on blindness and it's prevention.

Dr Ezeanowai advised the general public to make sure that  they go for proper eye checkups, especially those that use computers and the welders, who he advised must make sure they wear their goggles while working.

The immediate past chairman of the association, Dr. Chigozie Umeh said that many people do not do periodic eye examination nor take periodic preventive measures early and in some cases they use to patronize quacks who oftentimes worsen their problems.

He also noted that this walk is an opportunity to create awareness for the poor masses to be able to know how to tackle challenges and promote eye health, saying also that everyday is supposed to be world sight day because the health state of one's eyes affects all their activities.

Dr Umeh also gave kudos to the Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo for the opportunity given to optometrist to serve in Anambra State Health sector.

He also appealed to the Governor for more opportunity to the optometrist, especially in the rural areas to combat the menace of Eye quacks. (Ministry of Information).
