The criticism follows a viral photograph showing Abure presenting a Labour Party nomination form to a former National Vice Chairman of the party, Ceekay Igara, in the company of other party members. Reacting through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ukoha Ukoha, Governor Otti questioned Abure’s continued claim to leadership of the party.  Ukoha insisted that both judicial pronouncements and INEC’s position have effectively sidelined Abure, describing his actions as being in contempt of court. “I think Abure is in a better position to explain the grounds on which he is still parading himself after a Federal High...

By Okolonji Okechukwu

The Anambra State Government has initiated a renewed crackdown on illegal structures on the Chinua Achebe International Airport road, Umueri, Anambra East Council Area.

The joint government task force, which comprised of government officials and security personnel demolished the illegal structures mainly perimeter fences on the road.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman, Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB), Barr. Chike Maduekwe, said that Gov. Chukwuma Soludo has directed that such illegal structures and shanties should not be allowed to litter the road to the airport which can potentially serve as hideout for criminals.

Barr. Maduekwe further pointed out that the present administration is interested in protecting its citizens, promoting safety, and maintaining visual aesthetics of cities.

The ANSPPB boss said that, government soon will establish perimeter fences on the location, pointing out that both sides of the road which fall within the stipulated 50 meters, has been designated as a boulevard, where trees will be planted.

Barr. Maduekwe while assuring that compensations will be paid to affected property owners, said that many times, before government starts embarking on putting up their own structures, a lot of illegal developments hamper their effort.

He explained that the illegal structures were constructed without proper permits and violates the state building codes, pointing out that such structures are precarious and pose a threat to public safety, and undermines the efforts of law-abiding citizens who comply with building codes.

He warned that any building without the stipulated 50 meters setback, will be demolished, expressing hopes that the demolition of the illegal structures will send a strong message to those who would, in the future, consider building such structures.

While emphasizing that the Soludo government's commitment to keeping Anambra cities safe and aesthetically pleasing is reinforced by these actions, he added that ultimately, it is hoped that the demolition of the illegal structures will lead to a more orderly, safe, and beautiful communities for citizens.
