 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  Delta community razed after killing of soldiers in communal clash

   

Several houses in the coastal and rustic Okuoma community, in the Bomadi LGA of Delta state, were on fire, hours after 16 military personnel on a peacekeeping mission were killed. 


Tukur Gusau, director of information at the defence headquarters, in a statement on Saturday, said the military personnel — comprising a lieutenant ​colonel, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers — were killed by youths on Thursday.


“The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, while on a peace mission to Okuoma community in BOMADI LGA of Delta State were surrounded by some community youths and killed on Thursday, 14 March 2024,” Gusau said.


“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuoma and Okoloba communities both in Delta State.


“The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”


Christopher Musa, the chief of defence staff (CDS), has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.


In a video posted by Channels Television, black smoke could be seen billowing from some buildings in the community, as flames flickered in the distance.


A voice in the background could be heard saying: “Your eye go clear well well, I swear to God. No worry.”


Latest reports say 14 of the “beheaded” corpses have been recovered, with the entrails of some ripped out.


Some residents of the community have also fled, for fear of reprisal attacks from military personnel.


Gusau was not immediately available for a reaction to this story.


Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta, has condemned the incident, promising to “fish out” the perpetrators.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
