Governor Adeleke Threatens N5 Billion Lawsuit Against APC Over Defamation Claims

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, threatening to file a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against Kola Olabisi, the APC’s Director of Media and Information. This legal threat comes in response to Olabisi's claims regarding a viral video in which an unnamed chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) allegedly discussed violent plans related to the upcoming 2026 governorship election. Governor Adeleke's spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, characterized Olabisi's statements as “irresponsible” and “reprehensible,” demanding a retraction or facing potential legal consequences.

In his statement, Olabisi referenced the viral video, where the PDP chieftain purportedly expressed intentions to carry out violent acts against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State. He remarked, “The development has made the governor and his party prime suspects in the alleged plan,” urging security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly. Olabisi further questioned why Governor Adeleke and his party seemed fearful of losing the upcoming election, asserting that past elections had not resulted in chaos despite losses.

Rasheed firmly rejected Olabisi's allegations, asserting that they are baseless and defamatory. He stated, “Mr. Governor has ordered his lawyers to review the situation and demand retraction as the governor did not and has not in any way planned or plotted any attack on either INEC or any electoral official.” Rasheed emphasized that such claims could lead to significant legal repercussions for Olabisi if he fails to retract his statements promptly.
