Benue Police to Partner with Public Complaints Commission (PCC)

The Benue State Police Command has announced plans to collaborate with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) to enhance its existing Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU).

The announcement was made on Monday by the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Steve Hassan Yabanet, during a meeting with the Federal Commissioner of the PCC, James Oche, at his office.

This new initiative aims to streamline the referral of civil cases received by the Police Complaints Response Unit to the Public Complaints Commission, fostering better inter-agency cooperation. Commissioner Yabanet assured that cases falling outside the police’s jurisdiction and involving civil matters would be referred to the PCC, allowing the police to focus on addressing criminal activities and other critical issues impacting public safety.

He also committed to providing personnel from the police command to support the PCC’s work, particularly in enhancing security and assisting with enforcement actions against non-compliant parties under investigation.

According to Akura Orhemba, the Head of Publicity at the Benue State PCC office, the initiative was driven by requests from Chief James Oche, the Benue State Federal Commissioner of the PCC.

Mr. Oche explained that the purpose of the visit was to promote inter-agency collaboration to fulfill the PCC’s mandate of investigating and resolving complaints related to maladministration and injustice, whether proactive or reactive. He expressed gratitude for the police's role in maintaining public order, preventing crime, and safeguarding lives and property.

Since assuming office on October 2, 2024, Oche has recognized the importance of stronger cooperation with the police to address challenges requiring enforcement powers. He thanked Commissioner Yabanet for his support in providing personnel to assist with enforcement actions and commended the significant reduction in criminal activity in the state, which he attributed to the efforts of the police leadership.

Accompanying Mr. Oche on the visit were key members of the PCC, including the Director of Investigation, Justin Chuwang, and other officials.
