Catholic Knights Urge FG to Construct More Prisons Amid Overcrowding

The Catholic Church has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to build more correctional facilities to accommodate the growing number of convicted criminals. Concerned about the dire conditions in existing prisons, the Church highlighted the overcrowding and poor treatment of inmates due to the insufficient number of correctional centers. Sir Charles Mbelede, the Worthy Supreme Knight of the Knights of St. Mulumba, Nigeria, made the appeal during a press briefing in Calabar, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms.

Mbelede stated, "The state of the nation’s correctional centers is alarming, with outdated, overcrowded facilities that fail to properly care for inmates. We urge the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, to implement immediate and radical reforms." He pointed out that with 84,000 inmates, only 27,000 have been convicted, while the rest are awaiting trial, far exceeding the capacity of the country's correctional centers, which can hold just 50,000.

He called for the construction of modern prisons, stressing that the welfare of inmates should be a priority. The Knights of St. Mulumba have been actively involved in visiting correctional centers to provide charity, medical, and legal assistance, but Mbelede emphasized that these efforts are merely temporary solutions. He insisted that the key to addressing the issue lies in urgent, comprehensive reform.
