Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. In October, Niger renamed several historic sites in its capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.  CWCL: ‘Bring The Trophy Home,’ Okpebholo Rallies Support For Edo Queens

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Friday urged the Edo Queens FC of Benin, representing Nigeria in the ongoing 2024 CAF Women Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco to beat their South Africa counterpart, Mamelodi Sundown and return home with the cup.

Okpebholo’s directive was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua in Benin City.

He commended the team for their achievements so far, charging them to beat the South Africans to enable them to lead Group B into the semifinals.

“Go ahead to also win the cup and bring it to your fatherland. Sports will surely be given the top priority it deserves in my Government,” he said.

“I think the girls might be worried about the change of leadership in the Edo State, but I want them to know that we are with them. I have been briefed, and I know our team is in Morocco doing well. So, we will not abandon them. We are aware of the exploits, and I urge them to continue to dominate.

“My message to Edo Queens is that they have nothing to worry about. We are solidly behind them. We want our girls to be at Sundown Saturday and win for me.”

The governor assured the team of his continuous support, as they represent the state and Nigeria in Morocco.

According to him, the new administration is in solidarity with the girls who are representing the state and nation at the Confederation of Africa Football Women’s Champions League in faraway Morocco.

Edo Queens will engage in a fierce battle with the defending champions Mamelodi Sundown Girls in the last group game of the CAF Women Champions League on Saturday, November 16 2024 in Casablanca, Morocco.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 pm on Saturday.
