Nigeria's Metering Gap at 50% as DisCos' Monthly Revenue Reaches N160bn – NERC

Nigeria's metering gap remains at 50%, according to Yusuf Ali, Commissioner for Planning, Research, and Strategy at the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

This update comes as the monthly revenue of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) reached a significant N160 billion in July 2024.

Ali, speaking at the PWC Annual Power and Utilities Roundtable in Lagos, acknowledged that the metering deficit, which existed at the time of privatization, continues to persist despite efforts to address it. Since 2013, over 3.03 million meters have been installed through various initiatives, including the Credit Advance Payment for Metering Implementation (CAPMI), the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), and the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme.

He emphasized that poor customer enumeration across DisCos further exacerbates the metering issue, noting that effective metering is crucial for revenue recovery. Without proper metering, the success of tariff reforms would be compromised.

On the issue of DisCos' revenue, Ali highlighted a significant increase from N31 billion in July 2017 to N160 billion in July 2024. He also pointed to the positive impact of payment discipline initiatives launched in 2020, which have led to higher remittances to upstream players, such as generation companies (GENCOs).
