The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.  Sokoto Governor Presents N526bn 2025 Budget to State Assembly

On Friday, Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, presented a N526.88 billion budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly.

Describing the budget as the “Transformational and Infrastructural Budget,” Governor Aliyu emphasized its focus on long-term development goals. The proposed budget allocates N176.3 billion for recurrent expenditure and N349.4 billion for capital projects, with capital expenditure making up 66% of the total budget, underscoring the administration's commitment to infrastructure development.

The education sector received the highest allocation, approximately 25% of the total budget, followed by health, agriculture, and works. The governor further revealed that 44% of the budget would cover recurrent costs, including the new N70,000 minimum wage for state workers, pension payments, and other operational expenses.

Governor Aliyu assured civil servants that the new wage would be implemented from January 2025 and expressed gratitude for their ongoing support. He also confirmed that his administration has not incurred any loans from financial institutions to fund projects, stating that there are no outstanding debts to contractors.

While reflecting on the achievements of the 2024 budget, the governor acknowledged ongoing security challenges in certain local government areas, but reiterated his administration's commitment to economic growth and addressing security concerns. He stressed the importance of collaboration between security forces, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to address these issues and foster development in the state.
