Eleven Indian nationals and one other person were found dead at a restaurant in Gudauri, a mountain resort in Georgia, on December 13.
According to the Indian Embassy in Tbilisi, all victims were employed at the restaurant. Georgian authorities have ruled out violence and believe the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
In a statement issued on December 16, the Indian Embassy expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. “The Embassy is working closely with local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains to India and is in contact with the bereaved families to provide all possible support,” the statement read.
The bodies were discovered in a resting area on the second floor of the restaurant. Preliminary investigations suggest the poisoning occurred after a power generator was placed in an enclosed indoor space near the bedrooms. The generator was reportedly switched on following a power outage, leading to the buildup of toxic fumes.
The Georgian police have launched an investigation under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, which deals with negligent manslaughter. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has also ordered a forensic medical examination to confirm the exact cause of death. The tragic incident has shocked both local and international communities.
