Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. COURT DISMISSES CASE SEEKING CONTROL OF BROTHERHOOD OF THE CROSS AND STAR'S PROPERTIES. (PHOTO).

Court Dismisses Case Seeking Control of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star's Properties

The High Court of Rivers State, presided over by Honourable Justice E. Thompson, has struck out a case filed by a group attempting to take control of properties owned by the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star. The court deemed the case, filed under suit number PHC/797/2024, as incompetent.

The group had challenged the authority of the Brotherhood’s leader, Olumba Olumba Obu, seeking enforcement of their rights to worship at and own several worship centers in Rivers State. The applicants filed the case in June 2023, claiming a violation of their fundamental rights.

However, Justice Thompson ruled that the matter was about property ownership, not the infringement of human rights, and criticized the applicants' legal approach, which attempted to mislead the court. The court emphasized that the use of an originating summons, rather than a writ of summons, rendered the case without merit.

The legal representatives for the Brotherhood expressed gratitude for the judgment, affirming the lawful leadership of the organization. The administrator of the Brotherhood in Rivers State, Archbishop Emmanuel Ogwutum, reiterated that the judiciary is a vital avenue for justice.

Following the ruling, the applicants’ lawyer, E. E. Obomanu, thanked the court for refraining from imposing punitive costs against his clients. It is worth noting that the court had previously dismissed a similar case filed by Obomanu for non-compliance with legal procedures.
