OBASANJO SLAMS LAGOS-CALABAR HIGHWAY PROJECT AS WASTEFUL AND CORRUPT. (PHOTO)

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway project, labeling it as "wasteful and corrupt". He also condemned the President Bola Tinubu administration's decision to spend N21 billion on a new official residence for Vice President Kashim Shettima, calling it a "misplaced priority" and a conduit for embezzling public funds.

Obasanjo made these statements in his new book, "Nigeria: Past and Future," where he discussed the characters and portraits of chief executives at both federal and state levels. The book was unveiled last week to mark Obasanjo's 88th birthday.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, had previously revealed that the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would cost N4.93 billion per kilometer, with the contract awarded on a counterpart-funding basis rather than a Public-Private Partnership. Approximately N1.06 trillion has been released for the pilot phase, which accounts for six percent of the project.

Many prominent Nigerians, including Atiku Abubakar, have questioned the Federal Government's decision to award the contract to Gilbert Chagoury's Hitech Construction Company without competitive bidding. Chagoury is believed to be Tinubu's long-time business partner and friend.

Obasanjo also expressed concerns about the country's leadership, stating that many of those in power are "ill-prepared, satanic, self-centered, and all out to corruptly enrich themselves". He suggested that Nigeria needs to re-examine its democratic system and consider adopting an "Afrodemocracy" that takes into account African history, culture, and attributes.
