The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerian youths to take a bold and upright stance in the fight against economic and financial crimes, as well as all forms of corruption.
Olukoyede gave this charge recently when students from New Capital School, Abuja, visited the corporate headquarters of the commission in Jabi, Abuja, on a study tour.
The Head of Public Interface Unit, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Tony Orilade, who spoke for the Chairman , urged the youths to be courageous in speaking out against corrupt practices and to actively participate in the Commission’s efforts in sanitizing the country.
According to him, the active involvement of young people is crucial to eradicating corruption, which has caused significant harm to the nation's development.
“Be bold and upright in fighting corruption and other forms of economic and financial crimes. When you see something going wrong, speak up, correct it, and caution others about the dire consequences of such acts,” he said
He further encouraged the students to join the EFCC’s anti-corruption campaign, which aims to promote Nigeria economically and make her viable and attractive to investors. According to him, the fight against corruption is everybody’s affair, regardless of age.
“Join the anti-corruption fight; don’t say you are too young to join. Tell your parents and uncles that economic and financial crimes are detrimental to your future and the nation’s progress. Together, we can make Nigeria great again,” he said.
He also cautioned the students against engaging in internet fraud, examination malpractices and other illegal activities, urging them to uphold integrity and good moral values.
The Head of Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit, ACE II Aisha Mohammed, in her remarks described students as critical stakeholders in the fight against corruption.
She advised them to use their voices and influence to change the narrative and promote positive values in society.
“You are very important stakeholders in this fight against corruption. Your voices matter and you have the power to change the narrative for good. Be honest, fair, and accountable. When you see something wrong, speak up and blow the whistle so that the EFCC can take action,”she said.
She added that the visit was an opportunity to instill discipline, integrity and good values in the students, so as to model them into virtuous individuals the nation can be proud of.
Assistant Superintendent of the ASE II, Alare Johnson while speaking, reminded the students of dangers of internet abuse and peer pressure challenges.
He cautioned the students against succumbing to peer pressure that leads young people into criminal activities.
Johnson also advised them to be vigilant when using the internet, warning against fraudsters and scammers who could exploit their personal information.
“Be wary of fraudsters who can hack into your devices and steal your vital information. Always protect your data and avoid sharing sensitive details online,” she said.
