UK, French, and German leaders discuss Gaza after Macron supports Palestinian state.
The leaders of Britain, France, and Germany will hold an emergency call Friday to address the escalating hunger crisis in Gaza, following French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will become the first major Western power to officially recognize a Palestinian state. This move highlights divisions within the European E3 alliance over how to respond to the worsening humanitarian situation and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
While all three countries support the idea of a Palestinian state in principle, Germany has said it has no immediate plans to follow France’s lead, which Macron intends to formalize at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Britain has also yet to make a formal recognition, though Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently acknowledged Palestinian statehood as an “inalienable right.” Starmer, Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are set to discuss urgent measures to halt violence, provide critical food aid, and work toward lasting peace. The situation has intensified calls within Britain for recognition, with members of Starmer’s Labour Party pushing for action, even as the government seeks to balance relations with the U.S., which has condemned France’s decision.
