Trump clemency order cancels Santos’s fines and restitution

Former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) will no longer be required to pay fines or restitution related to his criminal conviction, according to a clemency order made public Monday.

Santos was released from prison Friday after President Trump signed a commutation of his sentence. Santos had begun serving an 87-month term three months ago. The clemency order grants “an immediate commutation of his entire sentence to time served with no further fines, restitution, probation, supervised release, or other conditions.”

Santos had pleaded guilty last summer to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft as part of a plea deal. He was also sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay more than $370,000 in restitution. In a recent interview, Santos said he would follow whatever the law requires regarding repayment but appeared uncertain about his obligations.

Originally sentenced to seven years in prison, Santos was expelled from Congress after investigations revealed he falsified much of his resume and lied on campaign finance reports. President Trump noted that Santos had been mistreated in prison and announced the commutation on Truth Social, wishing him well. Santos’s attorney, Joe Murray, confirmed he was released late Friday evening.
