Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan’s prime minister on Tuesday, making history as the country’s first female leader.
The House of Representatives confirmed Takaichi’s selection by open ballot during a plenary session. As president of the Liberal Democratic Party, she will serve as Japan’s 104th prime minister, receiving 237 votes compared with 149 for Constitutional Democratic Party leader Yoshihiko Noda. The vote followed the mass resignation of former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s cabinet earlier Tuesday.
Ishiba expressed gratitude to the public for their support and urged continued backing for the new government, saying his resignation was intended to prevent a split within the LDP after recent election setbacks. Takaichi’s rise was solidified after her party agreed Monday to form a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party. The LDP pledged to pursue policies addressing both domestic and international challenges while protecting citizens’ livelihoods and advancing Japan’s interests.
