ACTDA Cracks Down on Illegal Structures, Street Trading in Awka

By Ukpa Ewa

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has launched a renewed campaign against illegal structures, unapproved buildings and street trading that undermine the city environmental standards.

Addressing news men in Awka , the Head of ACTDA Development Control Unit Mr. Charles Ekwunife, said the sensitization exercise was necessary after repeated violations by residents.  He said that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA  Dr. Ossy Onuko has expressed concern over the disregard for environmental regulations. “Dr. Onuko has given people the benefit of doubt to maintain orderliness, but it seems this has been taken for granted,” Ekwunife said.

He noted that illegal constructions, including shanties, containers and buildings near high tension lines have reappeared despite previous enforcement. According to him, ACTDA's renewed action will ensure that laws against illegal constructions, roadside projections and unauthorized trading are strictly observed. “The entire Awka Capital Territory will be covered in this exercise. Illegal structures will be destroyed as this is the only language some people understand,” Ekwunife stressed.

On his part, the Commander for ACTDA Enforcement Sir Ukachukwu Okonkwo,  said the exercise aim to make Awka a properly organized capital city. He cited the development of the Fun City commissioned by Governor Chukwuma Soludo as example of orderly urban planning.

Okonkwo warned street traders operating near Ukworji St Paul's walkway, UNIZIK junction and Eke-Awka roundabout that their goods could be confiscated with persistent violators facing correctional measures. “We will stop at nothing to ensure free flow of movement, safety and a well organized city,” he said.

Both officials commended Governor Soludo for road construction and maintenance projects, noting that ACTDA’s enforcement efforts complement government initiatives to prevent accidents and maintain a prosperous city.

Residents have been officially notified in advance to avoid claims of being caught unawares, highlighting ACTDA’s commitment to maintaining environmental standards across Awka
