Tanzania stepping up crackdown on critics after recent polls, UN warns Tanzania has stepped up its crackdown on opponents after contested elections in October that were marred by deadly violence, the United Nations warned Friday, AFP reported. Rights groups say more than 1,000 people were shot dead during three days of protests over elections on October 29 that the opposition and foreign observers describe as fraudulent.  Afghan national arrested in Texas over alleged bomb threat, DHS says

Homeland Security officials announced the arrest of an Afghan national accused of making a bomb threat tied to a social media post in Fort Worth, Texas. Authorities said Mohammad Dawood Alokozay was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly posting online that he was “building a bomb” and threatening to blow up a building in the Fort Worth area. He was arrested on a state terror charge and is currently being held at a correctional facility in Tarrant County, according to court records. Officials said the arrest was carried out by the Texas Department of Public Safety and a joint terrorism task force.

The arrest came just one day before a separate and unrelated attack in Washington, D.C., in which two National Guard members were shot by another Afghan national, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal. One of the victims, U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, later died from her injuries, and Lakanwal now faces a first-degree murder charge. Authorities said immigration officials have also lodged a detainer against Alokozay as the investigation continues. No attorney information for him was immediately available.
