Anambra Governorship Candidates Sign Peace Accord Ahead of November 8 Poll

Candidates from 16 political parties contesting the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election on Tuesday signed a Peace Accord in Awka, pledging commitment to a violence-free and credible poll.

The ceremony, organized by the National Peace Committee, was chaired by its Chairman, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was represented by General Martin Luther Agwai.

Speaking at the event, General Agwai, on behalf of General Abubakar, emphasized that democracy thrives only where human lives are held sacred. He described the signing of the Peace Accord as a demonstration of the candidates' commitment, discipline, and responsibility to ensure a successful election.

In a goodwill message, INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan disclosed that the Anambra governorship election marks his first major assignment since assuming office. He reaffirmed the commission's resolve to deliver a free, fair, and peaceful election.

Professor Amupitan urged candidates and their supporters to adhere strictly to the rules and respect the principles of the accord. He assured voters of improved logistics on election day, stating that INEC had refined its deployment arrangements.

The INEC boss warned that the commission, in collaboration with security agencies, would clamp down on vote buying, with offenders facing arrest and prosecution.

He announced that INEC would deploy 24,000 personnel across 5,718 polling units, 326 ward collation centers, and 21 local government areas. The final voter register, approved by the commission, stands at 2,802,790, with 16 political parties fielding candidates.

Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Anambra, Uchenna Ugwuorji, called on political parties and candidates to remain lawful throughout the electoral process. He urged security agencies to maintain professionalism and avoid being used to intimidate candidates or supporters.

Ugwuorji advised aggrieved parties to seek redress through the courts rather than resorting to violence.

Convener of the National Peace Committee and Bishop of Sokoto Archdiocese, Most Reverend Hassan Mathew Kukah, appealed to political parties and their supporters to honor the accord for a credible and peaceful election on Saturday.

Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo commended the National Peace Committee for the initiative and described the Peace Accord as a sacred oath. He urged all candidates to internalize its provisions and called on INEC to ensure the will of the people prevails in the November 8 election.
