Dolly Parton says she’s pressing on despite health struggles and the loss of her husband

Dolly Parton is reflecting on a lifetime of music, love, and loss while continuing to embrace her busy career. The country music icon recently opened up about aging, her late husband Carl Dean, and her unwavering commitment to her work in an interview promoting her new memoir, Star of the Show: My Life on Stage. Parton, who has spent nearly seven decades in the spotlight, acknowledged the sacrifices her career demanded. “I really realized when I was putting this book together just how much I had sacrificed in my life. I never had children, so at least I didn’t have a guilty feeling. I’m thankful that I got to see my dreams come true,” she said.

Parton’s husband of 58 years, Carl Dean, passed away in March at age 82. Known for keeping a low profile throughout her rise to fame, Dean was a quiet but constant presence in her life. Parton described him as independent and content with solitude, saying, “He liked being alone… he loved being on the farm and doing his thing. And he was kind of a loner, which worked out best for us.” In the wake of his passing, Parton postponed her Las Vegas residency to focus on her health, reassuring fans in an Instagram video that she is not seriously ill. She remains determined to honor Dean’s memory through her art, featuring him prominently in her upcoming Broadway show, Dolly: A True Original Musical, which will debut in New York in 2026. “Seeing him every night like that… it’s almost like he’s never gone,” she said. Despite her grief, Parton insists she isn’t slowing down. “People say, ‘Well, you’re going to be 80 years old.’ Well, so what? Look at all I’ve done in 80 years. I feel like I’m just getting started. I ain’t got time to get old!” she said, continuing to celebrate the music and stories that have defined her extraordinary life.
