EME, LASG LAUNCH CAMPAIGN AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

A symbolic walk to enhance awareness and enlighten members of the public to end violence against Women and Girls has been held in the Alausa axis of Ikeja by the EME foundation in collaboration with the Lagos State Government as part of its '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based violence'.

Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Eniola Edun-Ogundana commended the various efforts by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Administration to safeguard the rights of Women and Girls.

It is noteworthy that the Lagos State Government created the Domestic and Sexual Violence Law and the Agency (DSVA) with a mandate to protect survivors, create an offenders register to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future violence through a coordinated and multifaceted approach. Hence, the purpose is to continue to strengthen partnerships with relevant organisations to protect Women and Girls in the digital age.

The advocacy walk, which had members of the EME foundation led by its Executive Director, Eniola Edun-Ogundana, commenced from the Ikeja City Mall through the State House of Assembly, terminating at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Alausa. Participants staged the walk while holding up behavioural change placards and having awareness dialogues with the public as a form of community engagement.

Edun-Ogundana explained that the annual campaign with the theme 'Unite to end digital violence' serves as a global call to action to end all forms of violence against women and girls.

In her words, "We are doing this advocacy to amplify awareness against digital violence, online bullying, cyber stalking, digital embarrassment and technology-facilitated abuse targeted at women and children in our society while promoting behavioural change to protect the female gender".

The partnership is one of the various efforts ongoing between the Lagos State Government through its Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and such voluntary groups to improve awareness among residents and strengthen the response of the Law Enforcement and Justice System.
