Fire breaks out in US Capitol subway, two officers hospitalized
A fire broke out Thursday afternoon in the U.S. Capitol’s underground subway system, sending two Capitol Police officers to a local hospital for evaluation. Officials reported that no passengers on the train were injured, though it remains unclear who was aboard at the time.
Footage from the scene showed smoke filling one of the tunnels, with a stopped trolley car appearing to burn near an electrical line. D.C. Fire Department crews responded to the blaze, describing it as a small electrical fire atop the underground trolley, and confirmed that it was extinguished. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the tunnel has since been cleared of smoke. The subway system, which connects the Capitol to the Rayburn House Office Building, is used to transport lawmakers, aides, and guests between government buildings. The condition of the hospitalized officers has not been released.
