The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. Amupitan announced that INEC has entered into a partnership with NIMC to deliver a credible voters’ register and transparent elections. He said INEC would leverage NIMC’s robust data archi...

‘I Led 600 Bandits To Surrender,’ Sheikh Gumi Defends Role In Negotiations

Popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has dismissed calls for his arrest over his ongoing commentary on banditry and national security, describing his critics as “spineless, irresponsible, and unpatriotic.”

For years, Gumi has positioned himself as a mediator between the government and bandit groups, a role that has drawn both praise and criticism. Some have accused him of shielding criminals by urging negotiation rather than endorsing a full-force military approach.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Sunday, Gumi defended his engagement with bandits, insisting that he has broken no law and that his efforts were aimed at securing peace. He condemned critics for politicizing his peace initiatives instead of addressing Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.

Gumi recalled a major intervention he led in January 2021 at Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where he was escorted by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police. According to him, over 600 armed bandits and their commanders attended the meeting, agreeing to surrender their weapons in exchange for security and basic amenities.

“The purpose of the meeting was to de-escalate violence. Over 600 bandits agreed to lay down their arms and presented conditions to the government, none of which were fulfilled,” he said, expressing frustration that authorities failed to implement the agreed terms.

He questioned why his mediation, carried out in the national interest, should attract calls for his arrest and criticized the hypocrisy of those targeting him personally. He argued that free speech is a constitutional right and warned that silencing dialogue-driven voices would not resolve the socioeconomic and security challenges fueling banditry.

Gumi concluded with a prayer for national unity, urging Nigerians to rise above emotional reactions and hatred-driven narratives. “May Allah protect our nation from bigotry, stubbornness, and intolerance of differing views,” he said.
