Indian fighter jet crashes during demonstration at Dubai Air Show

A combat aircraft from India crashed Friday during a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show.

The Indian HAL Tejas, a lightweight, single-engine fighter used by the Indian Air Force, went down around 2:10 p.m. local time while performing for spectators. Officials have not confirmed whether the pilot ejected or if there were any injuries.

Black smoke was seen rising above Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, prompting emergency sirens as onlookers watched the incident unfold. The airport is hosting the biennial Dubai Air Show, an event known for major aircraft deals by carriers such as Emirates and FlyDubai.

The Tejas is India’s indigenous fighter jet, produced by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The aircraft is intended to strengthen India’s fighter fleet amid China’s expanding military influence in South Asia, including closer ties with Pakistan.

In September, India’s Defense Ministry signed a contract with HAL for 97 Tejas jets, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. This follows a 2021 deal for 83 aircraft, which faced delays due to a shortage of engines imported from the United States.
