George Pogatsia, an actor often cast as a villain on shows like “Law & Order” and “The Sopranos,” became a real-life hero when he stopped a potential abduction near his home in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Pogatsia noticed a 19-year-old girl walking with her cousin, both visibly intoxicated, being approached by a man who appeared intent on taking the girl. The suspect, whom Pogatsia said was about 6’2” and dressed in black, reportedly tried to drag the girl down the street. Pogatsia’s wife first spotted the suspicious behavior and alerted him to follow.
When the situation escalated on Bowers Street and the man hoisted the teen onto his shoulder, Pogatsia confronted him, demanding he put her down. On a 911 call, Pogatsia can be heard describing the encounter to the operator, saying the girl and her cousin did not know the man. The suspect eventually dropped the girl and fled, and police arrived shortly afterward. The teen was unharmed, though the man got away. Pogatsia has since been recognized for his bravery, including receiving a letter of appreciation from President Donald Trump. Reflecting on the experience, Pogatsia said, “I usually play a bad guy, but it’s a lot more rewarding to be a real-life good guy.”
