Passenger arrested after attempting to open plane door during Boston-to-Hong Kong flight

A 20-year-old passenger was arrested in Hong Kong after allegedly trying to open an aircraft door during a long-haul flight from Boston to the city on Thursday. The man, identified only by the surname Zhang and traveling on a Chinese passport, attempted to tamper with the door while onboard a Cathay Pacific flight. Cabin crew quickly responded, checked the door to ensure it remained fully secured, and notified authorities. According to the airline, no one on the plane was injured, and the flight continued without further incident.

The aircraft, operating as flight CX811, landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport at 4:32 a.m. local time, slightly ahead of schedule. After landing, the situation was turned over to the Hong Kong police, who have opened an investigation under the Aviation Security Ordinance, which makes it a criminal offense to intentionally interfere with any part of an aircraft’s equipment or systems. The incident follows a separate case in September in which a passenger on another Hong Kong-bound flight accidentally opened an emergency exit after landing, though no injuries were reported in that event.
