The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics.  Putin warns Europe of war if conflict escalates, as Ukraine peace talks stall

Peace talks between the U.S. and Russia on Tuesday ended without a breakthrough, as Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his readiness for war with Europe if necessary. The discussions in Moscow involved U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with Putin and senior Russian aides to review a draft peace plan aimed at ending the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine.

The talks lasted five hours, with Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov calling them “useful, constructive, and highly informative,” though he said both sides remained far apart on key issues. Moscow continues to demand that Kyiv cede partially occupied territory in the east, while disagreeing over Western-backed security guarantees for Ukraine. Speaking ahead of the meetings, Putin said Europe’s peace proposals were “absolutely unacceptable” and warned that while Russia does not seek war with Europe, it is “ready right now” if hostilities arise. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, expressed cautious optimism, saying the country is “closer to peace than ever before.” Analysts, however, predict the process will be protracted, as Russia appears willing to prolong negotiations to extract concessions while continuing military operations.
