ADC Chieftain Demands Court Trial Or Release For Nasir El-Rufai

A leader of the African Democratic Congress, Usman Austin, has called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to either formally charge former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, or release him without further delay.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Austin expressed concern over El-Rufai’s continued detention, urging the commission to adhere strictly to due process.

He cited the recent approach of the Department of State Services, noting that the agency had sought judicial backing in handling comparable cases instead of resorting to prolonged detention.

According to him, allowing the courts to determine such matters through arguments presented by both prosecution and defence reflects democratic principles and respect for civil rights.

Austin maintained that any allegations against El-Rufai should be tested in court, stressing that established legal procedures must be followed. He added that the former governor had previously honoured an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and had cooperated with investigators.

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s custody, asking whether he was formally transferred to the ICPC or re-arrested after being granted administrative bail.

Austin said the lack of clarity raises concerns about compliance with the rule of law.

Reiterating the importance of transparency, he emphasised that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty and warned anti-corruption agencies against actions that could undermine democratic standards.

“If there is a case against him, it should be presented in court. If not, he should be released immediately,” the statement said.

Earlier reports indicated that El-Rufai was taken into ICPC custody shortly after being released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, where he had been questioned for several days.

The ICPC later confirmed that the former governor remains in its custody in connection with an ongoing investigation, stating that he was still with the commission as of the close of work on February 18, 2026.
