The Benue State Government has confirmed 383 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 47 testing positive and 14 deaths recorded since the outbreak began, even as authorities report no fatalities in the past 11 days.
The State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, disclosed this on Tuesday, providing an update on the outbreak. Earlier in February, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Msuega Asema, reported 251 suspected cases, 45 confirmed infections, and 10 deaths.
According to Ogwuche, only six new positive cases were confirmed from laboratory tests conducted over the last 11 days, indicating a decline in infection rates.
He said 20 patients are currently receiving care in isolation centres 14 at Benue State University Teaching Hospital and six at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
The commissioner attributed the reduced mortality and infection rate to intensified surveillance, public sensitisation, and improved case management across the state’s 23 local government areas.
“We have not recorded any mortality in the last 11 days. The cumulative suspected cases have increased to 383, while 47 cases are confirmed,” Ogwuche said.
He added, “The rates have dropped drastically due to active surveillance and early detection. People now understand preventive measures.”
Ogwuche also highlighted support from partners, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organisation (WHO), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness endemic in West Africa, primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated materials.
