Lagos State Ministry of Housing has intensified monitoring efforts on contractors handling key housing projects across the State to ensure timely delivery of the projects or be sanctioned.
During a scheduled inspection tour of the Lagos State Housing Estate Sangotedo Phase II Scheme and two other joint venture housing schemes within Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola and Technical Directors in the Ministry, frowned at the slow pace of work by some of the contractors and insisted on delivery within the agreed timeline.
The inspection formed part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Housing to monitor project implementation, evaluate construction progress, and ensure the delivery of quality housing infrastructure to Lagos residents.
During the visit to the Abraham Adesanya Housing Scheme, the Commissioner disclosed that the estate currently hosts four ongoing housing projects comprising over 600 housing units.
Speaking on the progress achieved so far, Hon. Akinderu-Fatai stated: “We have four ongoing projects in the Abraham Adesanya Scheme. The total is above 600 units for the Abraham Adesanya Scheme. We noticed some technical issues and we want to resolve them. We want to double up on our pace.”
He explained that the identified technical issues would be addressed immediately to ensure that construction activities continue without disruption and within the approved timelines.
At the Sangotedo Phase II Housing Scheme, the Commissioner expressed optimism regarding the pace of construction and projected that the development would be completed within the coming months.
According to him: “For Sangotedo, October-November, we will be done, and also see to the fact that we finish the Abraham Adesanya and Sangotedo projects before the end of this administration.”
The Commissioner noted that the completion of both projects would significantly increase the State’s housing stock and support the Government’s vision of providing affordable, decent, and sustainable housing opportunities for residents.
Hon. Akinderu-Fatai also stressed the importance of contractor accountability, emphasising that the State Government has fulfilled its obligations by providing adequate financial and technical support for project execution.
“The contractors are being charged to put in more effort, as the government has given them all they need, financially and technically, to complete the projects on time. If the contractors are slow, we will replace them,” he said.
The Commissioner maintained that the Government would continue to closely monitor project performance and take necessary measures to ensure delivery commitments are met.
Addressing concerns regarding previous delays, the Commissioner attributed some challenges to inflationary pressures that affected the construction industry. However, he assured stakeholders that the Government had successfully overcome those obstacles.
“We would have been done earlier, if not for the inflation. We have conquered that challenge of inflation actually, so we are good to go,” he stated.
The Lagos State Government remains committed to delivering housing projects that meet modern standards of quality, safety, and sustainability. The Ministry of Housing will continue to strengthen project monitoring mechanisms, engage contractors and consultants, and ensure that all ongoing housing developments are completed in line with the administration’s development agenda.
The inspection demonstrates the Government’s unwavering dedication to improving access to quality housing, enhancing urban development, and fulfilling its promise of delivering critical infrastructure that improves the quality of life for Lagos residents.
